About the event

From Phillis Wheatley Bread out of Detroit to the Ida B. Wells “Light of Truth” monument in Chicago, public memorials of African American women are the result of the intentional efforts from Black communities to create safe spaces of uplift and resist historical erasure. Dr. Alexandria Russell’s presentation highlights research from her book, Black Women Legacies: Public History Sites Seen & Unseen.
